Friday Video: Fashion Show of 1951

Friday, May 18, 2018

Loretta reports:

Those of us familiar with 1950s fashion will recognize at least some of the designers featured in this short film. If you like mid-century style, you might swoon over several ensembles—or maybe all of them. However, the audience is interesting, too. Those of us who follow such things are used to seeing the various Fashion Week shows with a large audience lined up on either side of a long runway. This one, at the Savoy Hotel, London, feels very exclusive, very much a private showing. It’s sedate, with no attempt at being inventive about the presentation or the venue. You may also notice how differently from today's models these women carry themselves: they have a different way of walking and they actually smile a little.

I’m in love with all the pockets!

The two white gowns were the show stoppers. But the audience outshone the show. They were all so elegant and beautifully turned out.

The pockets surprised me - strangely lumpy on so many otherwise elegant garments. The royal blue dress would've been gorgeous without that odd lumpy blob. The white dress with the fern leaf motif though was splendid!

I think the black blob on the blue dress was actually a bow, just hard to tell in low definition.
Who else wants an umbrells scabbard with belt now?!

What's interesting to me is that the clothes--if somewhat inventive in some instances--mostly appear designed for real women's street wear; and that while the models are slender, they're not starving. Fashion these days might benefit from a look back.

Lovely! Reminds me of the fashion show scene in the 1930s The Women.
